Djibouti is located in Horn of Africa along the coast between Eritrea and Somalia. Djibouti is economically strategically located along busy shipping lanes between the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Indian  Ocean. Friendly geopolitics between Ethiopia and Djibouti has allowed a railroad to built between Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Djibouti City, Djibouti. Agriculture is limited as the land is 4% Arable. The majority of the economy is shipping and nomadic herding.

The Issa and Afar ethnic groups are the main people groups in Djibouti with other minorities in the country. The Afar and Issa ethnic groups are mostly Muslim  with little outreach to them. Ethiopian Orthodox churches exist but proselytizing to Muslims is Prohibited. Djibouti is 97% Muslim and has been since the 7th Century. Leaving Islam results in persecution.

Praise God for the believers in Djibouti. Pray for evangelization of the Afar and Issa Muslims to begin soon and that the first churches may be started among these people groups in 2016. Pray for unity in the church as it seeks to serves the communities. Pray that the gospel be boldly proclaimed throughout Djibouti.

Somalia is on the east coast of Africa. Djibouti borders Somalia on the north, Ethiopia to the west, and Kenya to the south. Yemen is on the other side of the sea. Somalia has 2 parts, Somaliland which is the northern half, and puntland which is the southern half. Somaliland is more stable and has more freedoms than puntland. Puntland has had much war, violence, and people wanting more power. Somalia is known to be the most failed state in the world due to instability. The terrorist group Al-shabaab has made attacks in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

Praise God for the few Christians that are in Somalia. Praise God for the Christians that meet together in secret. Pray for Christian believers to grow in their faith. Pray for Somali believers to share ther their faith with their families. Pray that members of Al-Shabab hear the gospel and repent. Praise God for the forgiveness of persecuted Christians in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

Nigeria has a divide between the Christian south and Muslim north. After failed policies by the previous President Goodluck Jonathan by not being able to deal with the threat of Boko Haram, Muhammadu Buhari was elected President.

The attacks by Boko Haram have led to instability. One of the main beliefs behind the group Boko Haram is that Western Education is sin. Boko Haram has destroyed at least 2,000 schools. Boko Haram has left a few thousand children malnourished. Some members of the Hausa, Fulani, and Kanuri ethnic groups are members of Boko Haram. It has been known that if the Hausa and Fulani are reached with the gospel, that most of the West and Central Africa could be reached as well. The Hausa and Fulani languages are trade languages that other ethnic groups speak as well and can be used as a bridge to the gospel.

Open Doors has reported the killing of Christians has been up 67% in 1 year.

There is a plan by the newly elected leader to move the capital of Nigeria from Abuja to Maidjuri in order to help push back Boko Haram. The Catholic and evangelical churches in Maidjuri remain at risk to be either destroyed or believers of increased persecution.

There are strong churches in southern Nigeria. The Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups have high evangelical numbers.

Praise God for strong Christian churches in Southern Nigeria. Praise God for christians in Nigeria. Praise God for the faith of the Yoruba and Igbo ethnic groups in Southern Nigeria. Praise God for the few Christians in the north. Pray that Christians would be sent to reach the Hausa and Fulani in Northern Nigeria as few are trying to reach them. Pray for a growing hunger to know Jesus among the Hausa, Fulani,  and even some of the smaller tribes as well. Pray that God pushes back the forces of evil. Pray that plans that Boko Haram has may thwarted. Pray for some members of Boko Haram to hear the gospel soon.

https://encounteringjesusandhismission.com/2016/01/27/mali/

Libya was controlled by Italy during World War II and got independence  in 1951. The Arab Spring left many Muslims wanting stability and some seeking Jesus. Libya is a failed state as a result of taking Muammar Gaddafi out of power. Taking him out of power has resulted in different groups controlling areas of Libya. Not one group controls a majority of Libya. ISIS now controls 160 miles of coastline of Libya and is gaining ground.

There’s more on praying for Libya in the link below. (just a reference though)

Pray for Libya: Monday, February 15th

Praise God for people in ministry near universities. Pray for the people that are reading the Bible but haven’t come to belief yet. Pray for peace.

The Tauregs and Berbers remain unreached by the gospel. The Berbers have a complete bible in their language. The Tauregs have portions of the Bible in their language. Pray for churches to be started among the Berbers in Libya. Pray for the bible to be completed in the Taureg language. Since some of the Tauregs have joined Al Qaeda, pray that God softens their hearts and sends Christian believers to them.

Eritrea lies along the coast in the horn of Africa. Sudan borders Eritrea to the west. Djibouti and Ethiopia border Eritrea to the south. Across the sea is Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Eritrea broke away from Ethiopia in 1991 after a war. The majority of people in Eritrea practice Islam.

The number of people seeking asylum in Europe has grown in the past 3-5 years. Eritrea is a strong opponent to Human Rights which is one of the main reasons leading to the mass exodus. Human rights lawyers and activists are frequently sent to prison in Eritrea. Speaking out against the government of Eritrea can lead to being sent to prison. Although there are some traditional jails in the country, most prisoners are being kept in shipping containers in the Desert heat. Being a Christian in Eritrea or converting from Islam to a domination of Christianity that is not protected by the government can lead to being sent to prison.

Missionaries and foreign aid workers have been banned since 2002. Christians are either forced to leave or doing work in secret to share the gospel.

Students are eager to evangelize their peers. Christian radio broadcasts come in to Eritrea from countries nearby but some work has been shut down.

There are nomadic ethnic groups in the southeast such as the Afar Muslims. The Afar Muslims are in Ethiopia and Djibouti as well. Somali and others which are found in east African nations. Reaching these peoples could be key to reaching them in Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Somalia. The Tigre are majority Muslim.

Praise God for the Christians that remain behind to do ministry. Praise God for the faith of believers that meet secretly. Pray that radio broadcasts may be allowed to come into Eritrea again. Pray that people may get beyond blocked internet pages so that they may read the gospel and Christian literature. Pray that student ministries will bear fruit in Eritrea.

The ancient Mali empire rose from a province of Ghana. The mining of Gold brought wealth to west Africa in the 12th and 13th century. Gold was traded to North Africa and eventually to Europe. Salt and spices were trade from the Tauregs in North Africa for Gold in west Africa. The Tauregs invaded the Mali empire which led to the rise of the Songhai empire after. West Africa  (a few centuries) later colonized by France and Mali gained independence in 1960. Mali is landlocked and much poorer today.

Mali is 88% Muslim. The population growth in Muslim families has surpassed the growth of Christianity. Mali remains one of the poorest countries in the world and much help is needed here. Only a few ethnic groups are more than 1% evangelical. There is a low literacy rate in Mali.

Praise God for the student ministries here. Praise God for the schools in Mali run by Christians. Pray that the student ministries would bear much fruit in Mali. Pray for creative ways to share bible stories orally so that people may hear. Pray that the Christian schools help  the young people learn how to read.

https://encounteringjesusandhismission.wordpress.com/2014/09/01/africa/

As the world’s youngest nation came to be in 2011, South Sudan has not been short of challenges. South Sudan is still a country in transition.

The Dinka and Nuer ethnic groups have been fighting in a Civil War in South Sudan. The Nuer have held land for farming and grazing. The Dinka and Nuer have disagreed over territory. Cattle have been lost and farmland destroyed. People are living in famine.

Around 2/3 claim to be Christian, although some may be nominal in the church. Islam is growing at a slow rate and ethnoreligious tribal groups do not have the bible in their language. The war could cause many to die or as many as 6 million could leave as refugees in other countries. The churches in Africa have a tremendous opportunity to serve Christians and unbelievers.

Praise God for the church in South Sudan. Praise God for the faith and believers in South Sudan.

Pray for Christians to be sent into South Sudan to serve the muslims and share the gospel with them. Pray for open doors for the bible translators for ethnic groups that don’t have it in their language. Pray that Churches in African countries accept those that leave South Sudan. Pray that those that leave South Sudan will gain open minds and ears to hear the gospel so that one day they may Praise Jesus Christ as their lord. Pray for God to revive the land for farming and grazing so people can work the land and have food to eat.

https://encounteringjesusandhismission.wordpress.com/2014/11/15/ebola/

Ebola cases have risen but not by much. Cases of Ebola have risen in all three countries: Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. There were hidden cases being found where the outbreak started. There are hundreds of children orphaned by the disease.

Praise God that Ebola cases have dropped.

Pray that churches care for the orphaned and the sick. Pray that churches spread the gospel further. Pray for people to hear the gospel for the first time in areas hardest hit by Ebola. Pray that the impoverished poor realize when they have God, they have everything.

https://www.wycliffe.org/prayer/details/true-hope-for-ebola-victims

Ebola has affected 6 countries. These countries are Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. No new cases have been found in Senegal and Nigeria.

There is a different strain of Ebola that had a few cases in Democratic Republic of the Congo. That is unrelated to the Ebola strain in West Africa. This being noted here so people are not confused.

There are children orphaned by Ebola. There are children that have lost one or two parents. It is possible that nobody is helping them.

Christian missionaries and bible translators are actively working to reach Muslims or Tribal populations that don’t have the bible in their language. Christian workers are working to reach the muslims in Guinea. Guinea is over 85% Muslim.

Pray for the churches in west Africa to help the orphans.
Pray that God would protect those translating the Bible and reaching Muslims from Ebola and other diseases
Pray that God would give these people things they need to help finish the task
Pray for the Christians actively working to reach Muslims and that their ministry would be fruitful

Africa, Chad, Christian Missions, Christian Prayer, Ebola, faith, Geography, Nigeria

Before European colonization in 1880 or prior, most of the continent did not have well defined geopolitical boundaries. The only two tribes that are countries themselves after European colonization are Lesotho and Swaziland. After European colonization, the continent of Africa has become more ethnically diverse due to being separated by geopolitical boundaries. Geopolitical boundaries are basically the borders between countries. This is especially true of the Berbers in the North and the Bantu tribes in the southeast. Many African countries have become more ethnically diverse because the borders between countries prevent most people from traveling freely from country to country.

There are only two countries in Africa that are over 40% Muslim and 40% Christian. One of these is Nigeria.

Africa can be defined by specific regions depending on the different geographer you talk to. These different regions can be defined as the Sahara Desert, Savannah/Sahel, the horn, and other sub- Saharan African countries.

The savannah/Sahel is about 300 miles north to south and 3000+ miles east to west. The countries in the Sahel are: Sudan (southern), South Sudan, Niger, Nigeria (northern), Chad, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Mauritania. This region is frequently prone to droughts and floods. Except for South Sudan which is dominant Christian nation, this region is mostly Muslim and unreached by the gospel.

The horn of Africa is Ethiopia (eastern), Djibouti, Eritrea, and Somalia. Somalia is considered one of the most failed states in the world. Somalia has no central government. Since there is little food, people have resorted to piracy as a means of livelihood. There was someone recently thrown off a balcony for professing his Christian faith in Somalia.

Pray to God that through persecution, God’s word spreads in Somalia.

One of the problems in Africa is the large refuge populations. It is of the large refugee populations that some have lost hope. Without proper shelter, food, and clothing, many don’t know if they’ll live the next day.

It was through the Darfur, Sudan conflict in 2003 that many left for Chad. After people came to Chad, Christians served them and more came to know Jesus as their lord and savior.

Praise God for those got reached during that time. Pray that those Christians will show unconditional love with their neighbors in Chad.

Over the past few years, Boko Haram has ravaged villages and kidnapped children. Boko Haram took over the city of Gwoza in the Borno state of northeastern Nigeria. Boko Haram has declared an Islamic State there. The military of Nigeria has been struggling to fight them. Recently, between 500 and 1500 each week have been leaving Nigeria for Niger and Chad. This has created a new refugee situation.

Pray that God will raise up Christians to serve these new refugees. Pray that these refugees will soon know about the God that created them and forgives them. Pray they will have ears to hear the word of God from the bible.

Disease has left many children orphaned in several countries of sub-Saharan Africa. At times, HIV/AIDS has hit between 10% and 30% of people in a few countries. Thankfully, a few of these countries have improved economically and with health education, the rates of HIV/AIDS has come down. Praise God for improvements economically and health education that led to the rate of HIV/AIDS falling. Other countries have not fared as well because HIV/AIDS is still widespread.

The recent Ebola outbreak of 2014 has led to over 20,000 cases and over 1200 dead. The Ebola outbreak has hit Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria. A few places have been hit pretty hard economically due to being short of resources.

Pray that God raises people up to serve the children. Pray that any new treatments become affordable for new people. Pray for aid to come to the areas that have been hit economically. Pray that God uses these recent events to draw more people to himself.
